VRF technology explained simply

VRF systems are an efficient, sustainable, and future-proof solution used in buildings for heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water production. The abbreviation VRF stands for "Variable Refrigerant Flow." This means that VRF technology uses a flexible refrigerant system that circulates between a central outdoor unit and several indoor units. This enables individual zone control, whereby different areas of a building can be cooled and/or heated independently of each other.

VRF systems continuously adjust cooling or heating output to current demand, consuming only as much energy as is actually needed. Inverters regulate compressor output to monitor temperature precisely. The BC controller (Building Controller) enables central control, monitoring, and remote maintenance of the entire system. VRF technology therefore ensures more precise temperature control, individual zone control, increased energy efficiency, and seamless integration into building automation systems. Compared to conventional air conditioning systems, VRF technology can offer tailor-made solutions for a wide range of applications in buildings and is therefore often the preferred choice in modern, complex buildings.

R2 series: Simultaneous cooling and heating with heat recovery

R2 series

Versatile climate control, optimized for the whole year

The R2 series from Mitsubishi Electric is the only heat recovery system in the world that enables simultaneous cooling and heating with just two pipes. Heat energy extracted from a room during cooling operation can be used to heat other rooms or to heat water. Another efficiency bonus: the use of a special booster unit also enables hot water to be heated to up to 70 °C in the same system. The central component of every City Multi VRF R2 system is the BC controller, which acts as a refrigerant distributor and, together with the outdoor unit, forms a refrigeration and control unit for heat recovery.

Key features of the R2 series:

  • Each indoor unit can be used individually in cooling or heating mode.
  • Energy generated is reused in the process
  • Fewer connection points and thus reduced potential for leakage
  • No downtime when changing the operating mode of the outdoor unit, ensuring stable operation of the indoor units
  • Heat recovery with a system COP above 8
