How do VRF systems work?

Function

VRF Technology Explained Simply

VRF systems are an efficient, sustainable, and future-proof solution used in buildings for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as for hot water production. The abbreviation VRF stands for “Variable Refrigerant Flow.” This means that VRF technology uses a flexible refrigerant system that circulates between a central outdoor unit and multiple indoor units. This enables individual zone control, allowing different areas of a building to be cooled and/or heated independently of one another.

VRF systems continuously adjust cooling or heating capacity to current demand, ensuring that only as much energy is consumed as is actually needed. Inverters regulate compressor output to precisely control the temperature. The BC Controller (Building Controller) enables centralized control, monitoring, and remote maintenance of the entire system. VRF technology thus ensures more precise temperature control, individual zone control, increased energy efficiency, and seamless integration into building automation systems. Compared to conventional HVAC systems, VRF technology can offer customized solutions for a wide variety of building applications and is therefore often the preferred choice in modern, complex buildings.

Advantages of City Multi VRF Systems

Climate Control and Heating Solutions for Demanding Projects
Custom Zone Control

City Multi VRF enables individual zone control, allowing each room or zone of the building to be cooled or heated independently. This not only enhances personal comfort but also saves energy, as unused areas are not over-conditioned.

Low installation costs

Compared to traditional air conditioning systems with central ventilation ducts, City Multi VRF requires less complex installation. Wiring and piping are simpler, which results in a shorter installation time. In addition, less space is needed for ventilation shafts or ducts.

Low operating costs

Intelligent control and real-time adjustment of energy demand lead to a reduction in operating costs. Energy consumption is optimized by using energy efficiently and avoiding peak loads.

Flexibility in Building Design

City Multi VRF is suitable for both new construction and the retrofitting of existing buildings. Its flexible installation options and retrofit capabilities make it the ideal solution for a variety of construction projects.

Quiet operation

City Multi VRF indoor units are known for their quiet operation. This makes them ideal for environments where quiet and comfort are of the utmost importance, such as hotel rooms, hospital rooms, or conference rooms.

Environmental Sustainability

The energy efficiency of City Multi VRF reduces CO2 emissions compared to conventional air conditioning systems. This helps minimize environmental impact and reduce the ecological footprint of buildings.

Professional Building Management

Integrating City Multi VRF into the building's technical systems enables comprehensive control and monitoring of energy management, load management, security, room occupancy, and more. This takes comfort, energy efficiency, and security to a whole new level.

Ease of Maintenance

The City Multi VRF central control unit ensures easy monitoring and maintenance of the system. Errors and problems can be detected and resolved early on, maximizing uptime and efficiency.

R2 Series: Simultaneous Cooling and Heating with Heat Recovery

R2 Series

Versatile climate control, optimized for year-round use

Mitsubishi Electric’s R2 Series is the world’s only heat recovery system that enables simultaneous cooling and heating using just two pipes. Thermal energy extracted from a room during cooling operation can be used to heat other rooms or to heat water. Another efficiency benefit: By using a special booster unit, the same system can also provide hot water at temperatures up to 70 °C. The central component of every City Multi VRF R2 system is the BC Controller, which acts as a refrigerant distributor and, together with the outdoor unit, forms a refrigeration and control unit for heat recovery.

Key Features of the R2 Series:

  • Each indoor unit can be used individually in cooling or heating mode
  • The energy generated is reused in the process
  • Fewer connection points, resulting in a reduced risk of leakage
  • No downtime when switching the outdoor unit's operating mode, ensuring stable operation of the indoor units
  • Heat recovery with a system COP greater than 8

Y Series: Heating or Cooling—Always Energy-Efficient
