Air/water heat pumps
for new construction and modernization
ProduktreiheEcodan air-to-water heat pumps enable you to heat and cool your home in a particularly future-proof, sustainable, and efficient manner.
This is because an air/water heat pump, also known as an air heat pump for short, uses ambient air as its energy source instead of fossil fuels such as oil or gas. In addition, an air heat pump has an important advantage over a conventional boiler: it can be used not only for heating and hot water production, but also – depending on the model – for cooling. With a so-called "reversible" heat pump, rooms can be cooled to comfortable temperatures during the hot months.
Compared to a geothermal heat pump (brine/water or water/water heat pump), air/water heat pumps also eliminate the need for complex and costly ground collector installations, probe or well drilling in the garden—along with the necessary permits and insurance.
Sustainable heating – becoming independent of oil and gas
Sustainable treatment of our environment has become an important aspect of many people's lifestyles. Switching to a renewable heating system in particular contributes significantly to improving your own ecological footprint. In addition, an air source heat pump makes you independent of oil and gas – and the associated price increases and supply uncertainties.
Ecodan air-to-water heat pumps use the energy stored in the ambient air from solar radiation. This means they draw on a virtually inexhaustible source of energy. Thanks to their particularly efficient operation, Ecodan heat pumps make excellent use of this energy to generate space heating and heat drinking water. This protects nature and its resources for years to come.
Even more sustainable with electricity from renewable energies
In Germany, it is already possible to use electricity from renewable sources throughout the country to power heat pumps. This means that an Ecodan air-to-water heat pump can be operated entirely from renewable resources. A homeowner's own photovoltaic system can even produce some of the green electricity needed to operate the heat pump.
- Renewable heat source
- No complex drilling required

Anyone building a house today must comply with legal requirements such as the Building Energy Act (GEG). The good news is that this is easy to achieve with an air source heat pump. With an air source heat pump, you can comply with the strict limits without any additional measures. Play it safe from the outset and choose a heating solution with a future by opting for an Ecodan air-to-water heat pump system.

For renovation and modernization
Is your heating system getting on in years and in urgent need of replacement? If so, an air-to-water heat pump is the ideal choice. Not only will it increase the value of your property, it will also reduce your heating costs. These are points that make replacing your heating system a sensible move, even if renovation is not yet necessary. After all, a state-of-the-art heat pump will always cost less than your current heating solution.
5 advantages of Ecodan air source heat pumps
benefitsOnly a small portion of the energy provided by the air/water heat pump is consumed as drive energy. An air/water heat pump therefore requires only a small amount of electricity for its drive, which can also be generated from renewable energies. A heat pump obtains the rest of its energy from the ambient air, thus utilizing a free and universally available energy source. The security of oil and gas supplies has been, is, and will continue to be an issue that concerns us. It is also important to remember that oil and gas, as well as wood and pellets, are finite or limited resources whose price developments are often linked. Another advantage is that since no combustion takes place in a heat pump, CO2 emissions from heating are also reduced, which has a positive effect on the climate.
Many years of experience and a high degree of vertical integration distinguish Mitsubishi Electric as a developer and manufacturer of inverter-controlled refrigerant compressors —the heart of the Ecodan air-to-water heat pump. This is one reason why other heat pump manufacturers also rely on our compressor solutions and choose technology that is well thought out and always state of the art. Inverter technology ensures that the desired temperature is reached quickly and accurately. This reliably minimizes the need for time-consuming readjustments, large temperature fluctuations, and the associated loss of efficiency.
No costly drilling, no installation of roof collectors, no connection to the natural gas network. Simply set up the outdoor unit, install the indoor module, connect the two – done. Quick installation, low installation costs, and manageable investment costs that are eligible for government subsidies are all features of the Ecodan air-to-water heat pump—as is the flexible installation options for the units.
Ecodan heat pumps are also equipped with an SD card slot. This allows individual parameters to be set on a PC before installation and transferred via SD card. This not only reduces the installation and adjustment effort, but is also particularly practical in the event of servicing: operating data and error messages can be stored on the card and read out from the system, which makes it easier to find a solution.
Turn up the heating on your way home from your fall vacation or check the operating status from your sofa: the MELCloud app makes it possible. In addition to classic heating control, it offers you convenient control of the Ecodan heat pump via smartphone, tablet, or PC. The latest optimization of our MELCloud is quite impressive. In conjunction with Amazon Alexa or Google Home, you can benefit from convenient voice control. In addition, guest access can be granted to your heat pump specialist. This allows professionals to check remotely whether everything is OK and, if any problems arise, to locate the cause before they even set off.
Ecodan systems feature control technology that enables integration into a smart grid. This means they meet the requirements of the SG-Ready label (Smart Grid Ready). Possibilities are already being developed for how heat pumps with SG-Ready connections can be used for load management by energy suppliers. A plus point for operators: they will be able to benefit from cost-optimized tariff models. With our air source heat pumps, you are already equipped for the future.
Monoblock or split heat pump?
systemWhich system is right for you?
The monoblock system is characterized above all by its simpler installation, as the entire refrigerant circuit is located directly in the outdoor unit. Insulated water pipes transfer the energy from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit. This principle contrasts with the split system, which offers the advantage of slightly higher overall efficiency and greater flexibility in terms of installation. In this system, the energy is transported into the building via refrigerant.

Subsidy for EcodanUp to 70% subsidy for Ecodan air-to-water heat pumps
Heat pumps not only help to reduce heating costs during operation. Significant savings can also be made at the time of purchase thanks to government subsidies. Anyone who chooses Ecodan for their heating renovation and has the system planned efficiently will be rewarded with a subsidy of at least 30% of the eligible costs. When completely switching from a fossil fuel-powered boiler or night storage heater to an air source heat pump , cumulative bonuses of between 5 and 30 percent can be added, depending on the area of application, the type of applicant, or the technology used. However, the maximum subsidy rate is capped at 70 percent.
Ecodan air-to-water heat pumps are included in the official list of heat pumps eligible for subsidies from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA).

How does an air source heat pump work?
FunctionEnergy from the air
An Ecodan air-to-water heat pump follows a simple basic concept: harnessing energy from the ambient air in the home. To do this, it has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that are connected to each other. The outdoor unit uses the energy available in the air and transports it to the indoor unit. This also works in the depths of winter when temperatures are below freezing. As long as the absolute temperature of the outside air is above "absolute zero" of –273.15 °C, heat can theoretically still be extracted from it. The location of the outdoor unit is planned so that fan noise is optimally dampened, for example behind hedges or trees in the garden. The energy is transported to the indoor unit via a refrigerant circuit and transferred to the heating circuit. Find out more in our FAQ: How does a heat pump work?
