Air-to-Air heat pump for a vacation home
More Comfort and Relaxation in the Thatched-Roof Vacation Home
GermanyComfortable living right on the lake
Especially during the summer months, comfortable temperatures play a major role in how relaxing a stay in a vacation home is. As heat waves become more frequent, indoor spaces heat up more, particularly under the roof or in homes with large windows. A modern air conditioning system enhances comfort, regulates humidity, and thus contributes to a pleasant indoor climate. As a result, it is no longer considered a luxury, but rather an increasingly important feature for vacationers seeking relaxation who are looking for suitable vacation accommodations—even in supposedly cooler regions.

Initial Situation
Initial SituationThatched-roof vacation home right on the water
Built in 1990, the “Beach Cottage” vacation home is located right on the shore, nestled in the midst of an idyllic garden. With direct access to its own private beach and a pedal boat moored at the shore, this thatched-roof cottage exudes the charm of a Rosamunde Pilcher movie. The cottage has a total area of 90 m², spread over two floors, offering plenty of space for relaxing getaways with family or friends. The ground floor features a entryway, a shower room, an open kitchen, and a living and dining area. The upper floor has two bedrooms that offer a quiet retreat, a walk-in closet, and a small hallway. A cottage straight out of a picture book: cozy and furnished to a high standard.
What was the challenge that needed to be addressed with regard to air conditioning?
ChallengesThe Right Technology for a Thatched-Roof Vacation Home on the Water
As much as a thatched-roof house by the water may evoke a vacation feeling, if it lacks the right technology to heat or cool the rooms according to the outside temperature, that vacation feeling quickly fades. That’s why the owners of “Beach Cottage”—who had already had underfloor heating installed on the ground floor some time ago to ensure comfortable heat distribution—decided to undertake further renovation measures.
What solution ensures an optimal indoor climate in a vacation home?
SolutionsTwo MSZ-AY M-Series air-to-air heat pumps on the upper floor
As part of the second renovation, the vacation home was given a new thatched roof as well as new thermal insulation for the ground floor and attic. These measures preserve the home’s charm while significantly improving the quality of life there in every season. This added comfort is particularly noticeable on the upper floor, especially since an efficient air-conditioning system was also installed there.
The system consists of two compact wall-mounted units installed by Kälte Klima Schmitz. “Our M-Series MSZ-AY units installed in the Beach Cottage are a solution designed with comfort in mind, providing soothing coolness in the summer and efficiently supporting the floor heating in the winter,” says Michael Lechte, Product Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, Living Environment Systems.
No disturbances at night
The MSZ-AY units are true all-around performers that impress not only with their excellent efficiency ratings but also with their generally quiet operation. If you prefer an even quieter environment, you can switch the units to night mode in the evening, which turns off the beeps from the indoor unit—which serve as a confirmation signal for commands received from the remote control. In addition, the operation LED on the indoor unit is turned off, preventing distracting light sources in the dark. The outdoor unit’s operating noise is also further reduced in this mode.
Perfect Indoor Air Quality Thanks to the Plasma Quad Plus Filter
The units come standard with a V-Blocking filter and already ensure good indoor air quality. However, the owners of the vacation home went one step further and had the system upgraded with a Plasma Quad Plus filter, which efficiently filters mold, allergens, fine dust, and other pollutants from the air. It even neutralizes viruses and bacteria.
Easy to operate using the remote control and the MELCloud app
Thanks to an infrared remote control that allows guests to set their preferred temperature at the touch of a button, operation is both convenient and simple. In addition, the wall-mounted units feature a Wi-Fi adapter, so they can also be controlled via the MELCloud app using a cell phone, tablet, or computer. This is a real plus, especially for a vacation home that isn’t always occupied: After all, the temperatures in the Beach Cottage can be set accordingly even before guests arrive, ensuring that the new temporary residents are greeted by a perfect indoor climate.
What the owners say
What the owners sayWe have fully achieved our goal of offering our vacation guests greater comfort through a long-term and sustainable solution,” say the vacation home owners, who have already had positive experiences with the Ratingen-based manufacturer at other properties in Germany and Mallorca, summing up their satisfaction. “In addition to the quality of the products, what particularly impresses us about Mitsubishi Electric is the excellent advice, the high level of reliability, and the strong network of skilled tradespeople.”
