Anyone who renovates non-residential buildings and upgrades them to a higher energy efficiency level can also benefit from BEG subsidies for cooling systems for room cooling. This is because the individual measures of the federal subsidy program for efficient buildings provide for subsidy opportunities for these systems in this area as measures from the "plant technology" subsidy segment.
Subsidies amounting to 15 percent of eligible costs can be applied for here – for all systems that meet the minimum technical requirements. However, there are a few points to bear in mind when applying to ensure that the subsidy is actually paid out in the end.

Subsidies for refrigeration compression equipmentAir conditioning units and chillers that meet the relevant minimum requirements are taken into account by the BEG in non-residential buildings in the field of plant engineering and are subsidized at 15 percent of the eligible investment costs. The decisive factors here are the power control of the compression refrigeration systems and the calculated annual space cooling efficiency (ETA s, c), which describes the efficiency of the system.
Ventilation and air conditioning systems, including heat/cold recovery systems, are also eligible for the same percentage of funding if they meet the minimum technical requirements.
Before submitting an application to the BAFA, an energy efficiency expert must prepare a technical project description that takes into account the manufacturer's specifications in accordance with the guidelines.
The eligible costs here are up to €500 persquare meter of net floor space in the building being supplied. Nearly all products in the M series, Mr. Slim, (H)VRF, and most air- and water-cooled chillers are eligible for funding here.
The BEG also promotes air-to-air heat pumps.
Subsidies for air-to-air heat pumpsMost modern air conditioning units today are reversible. This means that they can also be used as heat pumps for heating purposes. In many commercial buildings, air-to-air heat pumps can complement or even replace water-based heating systems very effectively.
In addition to efficiency requirements specified by ETAs limits, heat pumps must be tested and certified by an independent institute. If the systems meet these requirements, they are included in the list of tested heat pumps. For this reason, energy efficiency experts do not need to be involved when applying for this measure, and the application can be submitted without the technical project description. The subsidy here is 30 percent.
Most M-series, Mr. Slim, and VRF products can also be promoted as air-to-air heat pumps.
Water-based heat pump systems are also eligible for subsidies at the same rate.
Heating and air conditioning also eligible for subsidies under systematic measures
Heating and air conditioningWhen promoting systematic measures, all projects that result in a building achieving a certain level of energy efficiency are considered as a single overall measure.
However, efficient cooling systems play a key role here. If efficient systems based on renewable energies cover more than 55 percent of the heating and cooling requirements, a renewable energy bonus can be applied for for the building. This is granted in addition to the respective subsidies that are paid when the respective efficiency level is achieved. An additional 5 percentage points for renovation.
