Heat pump cascades offer high heating outputs of up to 138 kW in large properties, as well as high operational reliability thanks to system redundancy. In order to be able to utilize the unique advantages of our heat pumps in buildings with higher heating requirements, several Ecodan air-to-water heat pumps are connected in cascades—with particularly efficient, intelligent control technology. This allows the air-to-water heat pumps to be used in larger properties such as apartment buildings, office buildings, or hotels. We offer preconfigured sets with matching accessories for this purpose. If the heating requirements are even higher, several cascades can be used in the same property.

Further advantages of the cascade connection are flexible, modular installation and balanced running times for the individual devices. Additional communication adapters also allow the system to be easily integrated into a higher-level building management system.

In addition, our large heat pumps and hot water heat pumps are suitable for cascade connection in buildings with particularly high heat or hot water requirements.

In the Ecodan system, up to six heat pumps can be connected in series as standard. A cascade master controller calculates the maximum achievable coefficient of performance (Max-COP) based on the power consumption of the outdoor units, the current heating output, and the outdoor temperature, and regulates the system accordingly. This ensures that the individual cascade modules are always switched on in the most efficient operating range. Thanks to this intelligent control technology, Ecodan cascades always operate in the optimum efficiency range – and are significantly superior to a large single heat generator, for example, in terms of operational reliability. Operating as a cascade is therefore much more than an end in itself for achieving the required performance levels.

Subsidies per cascaded heat pump

Ecodan heat pumps meet all the requirements for federal subsidies for efficient buildings (BEG). The subsidy for a heat pump cascade solution is the same as that for a single Ecodan air-to-water heat pump. In this case, the subsidy for eligible costs is at least 30%. Depending on the area of application, type of applicant, or technology used, cumulative bonuses of between 5 and 30 percent may be added. However, the maximum subsidy rate is capped at 70 percent.

Flexible and powerful

Ecodan air-to-water heat pumps impress not only with their efficiency, but also with their simple installation and flexible application options. They always consist of a perfectly matched outdoor and indoor unit. This allows the heat and hot water supply to be tailored efficiently to individual needs—and in many cases even to provide cooling in summer. When cascaded, they achieve a heating output of up to 138 kW. In cascade operation, standard heat pump outdoor units are combined with an indoor module that is specially designed for cascading.

For high domestic hot water demand

The combination of an Ecodan air-to-water heat pump cascade with a QAHV hot water heat pump offers the perfect solution for buildings with high domestic hot water requirements. In such cases, the cascade supplies the rooms with heating only, while the hot water heat pump provides the domestic hot water. In apartment buildings, for example, it makes sense to use a hot water heat pump instead of the usual apartment transfer stations for buildings with 30 or more residential units. Sports facilities, fitness centers, hotels, and nursing and senior centers also benefit from drinking water heating with CO2 heat pumps.

For industry and commerce

Mitsubishi Electric large heat pumps are primarily designed for use in commercial and industrial applications, with rated heat outputs of up to 2.7 MW. This makes them the perfect complement to the Ecodan cascade solution. We offer air-cooled and water-cooled heat pumps, as well as air-cooled and water-cooled multifunctional heat pumps for the simultaneous and independent preparation of cold and hot water.
