What are chillers and how do they work?

Definition & Function

A cold water unit, often referred to as a chiller or liquid cooler, is a refrigeration machine used to cool small to large buildings or technical processes.

Unlike a conventional VRF air conditioning system, cold water or a water/glycol mixture circulates as the cooling medium in the building instead of a refrigerant. This is why chillers are also referred to as cold water generators.

Air-cooled chillers dissipate the heat extracted from the cooling medium via the outside air, while water-cooled chillers dissipate the heat via the cooling water. In principle, heat recovery systems (HRS) can also be used for this purpose. Chillers can also be used as heat pumps and can cool or heat with this function.

In addition, there is free cooling technology, in which the cooling medium releases heat directly into the ambient air.

Air-cooled chillers

Air-cooled chillers are the most commonly used type of equipment. These chillers are equipped with fans on the condensers and are designed for outdoor installation – however, there are also versions available for indoor installation. The units are compact and quick to install, as they are manufactured ready for operation at the factory. Optional integrated hydraulic modules are often available. Work on components carrying refrigerant is not necessary.

Water-cooled chillers

Water-cooled chillers are designed for indoor installation in buildings. The condenser in the refrigeration circuit is water-cooled. The heat is dissipated via a hydraulic recooling system, which is often equipped with an air heat exchanger (recooler) for outdoor installation, or via geothermal probes or groundwater, for example. Water-cooled systems have a wide range of outputs and are often used in buildings where particular attention must be paid to noise emissions.

Chillers with free cooling

Chillers with free cooling are always a sensible choice when cooling is required even at low outside temperatures.
In this case, the heat energy is not extracted via the mechanical refrigeration cycle in the machine, but rather the cooling medium releases the heat directly into the ambient air. This means that cooling is virtually free of charge. Free cooling is particularly suitable for applications with high media temperatures or for applications where cooling is required throughout the year.
