Heat Pumps FAQ – Your Questions, Our Answers

What is KEYMARK certification for heat pumps?

Certification for heat pumps. European, voluntary, and independent.

FAQ 04.10.2023

KEYMARK is a voluntary and independent European certification mark (ISO Type 5) for heat pumps, combination heating units with heat pumps, and domestic hot water heat pumps.

KEYMARK is based on an independent test conducted by a recognized testing laboratory and indicates compliance with regulatory product requirements. In addition, the units must meet the efficiency and noise emission requirements for heat pumps as specified in the Ecodesign Directive. The manufacturing process is also certified. All Ecodan units are KEYMARK-certified.

FAQ
What does KEYMARK mean in the context of heat pumps?

KEYMARK is a voluntary and independent European certification mark (ISO Type 5) for heat pumps, combination heating units with heat pumps, and domestic hot water heat pumps. It indicates compliance with defined product requirements and is based on testing conducted by recognized, independent testing laboratories.

Is KEYMARK certification mandatory for heat pumps?

No, KEYMARK certification is not required by law. Manufacturers have their devices certified on a voluntary basis. For specialized contractors, planners, and end customers, however, the certificate provides reliable guidance, as it makes verified product data transparent and comparable across manufacturers.

What is tested as part of the KEYMARK certification process?

Compliance with product requirements and key performance data for the devices are verified. This includes, in particular, ensuring that energy efficiency and noise emission requirements are met in accordance with European ecodesign guidelines. In addition, the manufacturing process—such as through in-house production control—is also taken into account to ensure consistent quality.

Why is KEYMARK important for heat pumps?

Certification provides a reliable and objective basis for selecting, planning, and comparing heat pump systems. It confirms that key performance and efficiency specifications are not based solely on manufacturers’ claims but have been verified by independent bodies.

Are Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps KEYMARK-certified?

Yes. All Ecodan units from Mitsubishi Electric are KEYMARK-certified. This means they provide an independently verified data foundation for use in new construction, renovation projects, and both residential and commercial buildings.

What does KEYMARK tell us about a heat pump's efficiency?

KEYMARK confirms that efficiency values were determined in accordance with uniform and recognized European testing standards. This ensures that key performance indicators are reported under standardized conditions, making it easier to reliably compare certified products with one another.

Is KEYMARK the same as the energy label?

No. The energy label required by law primarily provides information about a product’s energy efficiency class. It is based on legally defined standards and the relevant product data provided by the manufacturer or supplier. KEYMARK goes a step further: The certification is voluntary and is based on an independent inspection of the appliance as well as requirements for product manufacturing.
