Hotel Competence Center presents hybrid VRF technology

Experience efficient air conditioning technology live

Upper Schleißheim

As an information platform for architects, investors, operators, tenants, and planners, the Hotel Competence Center presents everything required to run a hotel, restaurant, or similar establishment across an area of 3,500 square meters. When it comes to air conditioning, the Hotel Competence Center focuses on efficient air conditioning technology with heat recovery for simultaneous cooling and heating. The Mitsubishi Electric HVRF system on display there combines the advantages of a direct evaporation system with those of a water-cooled system and is characterized by its high energy efficiency.

How the permanent trade fair for the hotel and restaurant industry works

permanent exhibition

On the ground floor, there is a catering competence center with a fully functional commercial kitchen and extensive accessories for successful guest hospitality.

On the first floor, visitors can view and try out 13 fully furnished hotel model rooms, a fully equipped bar area, public areas such as the lobby and reception, and numerous different furnishing solutions for optimal hotel operation.

One floor higher, on the second floor, cooperation partners have the opportunity to present their products and series in small exhibition lounges, which can be visited at any time by appointment.

"The advantage of our concept is that different trades, accessories, and interiors can be tried out on site and compared independently of manufacturers," explains Christian Peter, managing partner of the Hotel Competence Center.

Hybrid VRF system

Hybrid VRF system for high efficiency and comfort requirements

The different areas offer everything a building in different budget categories requires. In addition to bathroom solutions, visitors can also explore fully functional locking systems, cash register and cleaning systems, and even air conditioning solutions. When it comes to air conditioning, the Hotel Competence Center focuses on efficient air conditioning technology with heat recovery for simultaneous cooling and heating. The Mitsubishi Electric Hybrid VRF System (HVRF) on display there combines the advantages of a direct evaporation system with those of a water-cooled system and is characterized by its high energy efficiency.

Various indoor air conditioning units are on display for exhibition purposes and for use in the company's own offices, meeting room, and technical room. A total of seven different indoor unit models can be viewed in full operation there. A wall-mounted unit in the building services room mainly dissipates excess heat energy. Two ceiling cassettes in Euro grid dimensions cool or heat the offices as required, a 4-way ceiling cassette air-conditions the meeting room, and a ducted unit is used in each of two Hotel & Care rooms, which are specifically designed for care purposes. A 4-way ceiling cassette with an automatically lowerable filter element is installed in the Mitsubishi Electric presentation lounge.

Low operating costs thanks to heat recovery

operating expenses

All indoor units are integrated into the Hybrid VRF System (HVRF), allowing them to be experienced live on site in a variety of applications. The Hybrid VRF System (HVRF) is a 2-pipe system for simultaneous cooling and heating with heat recovery. It consists of a VRF outdoor unit from the City Multi series, a Hybrid BC Controller (HBC), and special indoor units equipped with a water coil. The heat recovery function ensures that heat extracted from the rooms to be cooled is not released into the environment, but is used via the Hybrid BC Controller to heat rooms that require heating.

The outdoor units are available in seven sizes, with cooling capacities ranging from 22.4 to 56 kW and heating capacities from 25 to 63 kW for individual units. All sizes are available in two efficiency variants. The fully inverter-controlled compressor generates exactly the power required for each demand. The indoor units are equipped with continuously variable valves that deliver the exact amount of water required to comfortably reach the set desired temperature. This interaction results in efficient operation and thus very low operating costs. For demonstration purposes, an air-cooled outdoor unit of type PURY-EM200YNW-A with 22.4 kW cooling and 25 kW heating capacity is used in the Hotel Competence Center to supply all seven indoor units.

Do not use refrigerant pipes in the building

refrigerant lines

By separating the system into a refrigerant-based and a water-based section, this system requires a significantly reduced refrigerant charge. The hybrid VRF system (HVRF) uses the refrigerant R32 and therefore has a significantly lowerCO2 equivalent than conventional systems. This means that it already meets the requirements of the F-gas Regulation for 2030.

On the one hand, R32 has a low GWP value, and on the other hand, the system also saves on refrigerant charge because water is mainly used as the transport medium in the building. The refrigerant only circulates between outdoor units and hybrid BC controllers (distribution units), which can be housed in a utility room or a suspended ceiling in the hallway. A distribution unit forms a refrigeration and control unit with the outdoor unit and, depending on the heating or cooling requirements, forwards warm or cold water to the various air conditioning circuits. With the help of this innovative technology, projects can be realized in which refrigerant lines in the building are to be expressly avoided.

Simultaneous cooling and heating – ideal for hotel rooms

Cooling and heating

The Hybrid VRF System (HVRF) was developed specifically to meet the demands of modern building architecture with high efficiency and comfort requirements. The vast majority of properties in which this air conditioning technology is already in use—including numerous hotels and office buildings—can therefore manage without a conventional heating system for space heating.

The Hybrid VRF (HVRF) system scores points by allowing individual selection of cooling and heating modes for each room, regardless of the season, time of day, or outdoor temperature. In addition, the system's additional water circuit provides stable and milder air outlet temperatures, which are perceived as very pleasant. The planning and installation of the 2-pipe system is very flexible and therefore much easier compared to a chiller and an additional heat generator with four pipes. For example, the Hybrid City Multi system does not require any additional pumps, tanks, or changeover valves. In a 2-pipe system, there are also significantly fewer connection points in the pipe network, which reduces the potential for leaks and makes the system safer and less maintenance-intensive.

Smart control – tailored to the needs of the hotel industry

Smart control

In addition to the outdoor and indoor units and the Hybrid BC Controller, interested visitors can also experience flexible and reliable operating concepts for convenient operation of the air conditioning systems. Mitsubishi Electric offers a wide range of control system products, the most important of which for hotel operations are on display in full working order at the Competence Center. The Hybrid VRF systems (HVRF) are generally controlled via the in-house M-Net. This ensures data flow between the units and the control system, as well as an optional higher-level building management system. Retrofitting the system with automation is not necessary.

The valves used on the indoor units can also be used to calculate the exact amount of heat or cooling required for each individual room, if desired. The data from the indoor units, the continuously variable valves, and the outdoor units is transmitted to the central remote control via the M-Net bus. Individual cost billing can then be carried out using a central control system such as the AE200 or the cloud-based RMI tool.

Modern, individually configurable remote controls are available for customized control of the room climate and can be easily integrated into the design concept of a hotel room. The modern and visually customizable PAR-CT01 remote controls also provide cooling and overheating protection for unoccupied hotel rooms and switch off the air conditioning system as soon as the room card is removed. In each room, guests can individually select the temperature using an elegant hotel remote control, which can also be configured via an app.

Julia von Klitzing, authorized signatory of the Hotel Competence Center Oberschleißheim, explains:

"Using Mitsubishi Electric as an example, I have the opportunity here to guide our guests through various hotel rooms and present them with different solutions.

The issue of sustainability plays a very, very important role in our everyday lives—especially considering that we are very much concerned with the future generation, for whom this is an extremely important criterion. And we are actively working with our partners to make more and more areas sustainable."
