BEG funding for air-to-air heat pumps in residential buildings

Secure attractive subsidies for heating system modernization

Blog article 24.03.2026

The majority of heating systems installed in Germany are outdated. For those who want to gradually switch from fossil fuel heating to a sustainable and future-proof heating system, or who need more flexibility, air-to-air heat pumps are a real alternative. Best of all, air-to-air heat pumps will continue to be subsidized under the BEG funding program in 2024.

Did you know?

Most modern air conditioning units (air-to-air heat pumps) can also be used for heating. In residential buildings, air conditioning systems can complement or even replace water-based heating systems very well as air-to-air heat pumps.

Great potential for CO2 reduction

Looking at the climate targets in Germany and Europe, urgent action is needed. Inefficient heating systems in poorly renovated old buildings contribute significantly to excessive CO2 emissiones. The large stock of outdated heating systems therefore offers enormous potential for reducing CO2 emissions in the residential building sector.

The Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG) program therefore creates attractive incentives for the use of new, efficient heat generators: If you use renewable energies for heat generation as part of a residential building modernization project, you will receive extensive subsidies.

Eligible for funding?

These air-to-air heat pumps are eligible for subsidies

In addition to efficiency requirements, heat pumps must be tested and certified by an independent institute. If the systems meet these requirements, they are included in the BAFA's list of tested heat pumps. For heat pumps from this list, you do not need to involve energy efficiency experts and can waive the application for this measure. You also do not need the "technical project description."

Mitsubishi Electric offers a comprehensive range of air-to-air heat pumps that allow you to benefit from BEG subsidies. Our M-series air-to-air heat pumps meet all federal subsidy requirements and are eligible for the same subsidies as our air-to-water heat pumps.

Important: If you combine air-to-air heat pumps in your home, they must achieve the required efficiency of A++ or A+++ (energy efficiency classes from A+++ to D) in heating mode in order to be eligible for subsidies. Combinations must always be checked individually and a corresponding energy label must be created using the ERP calculator.

Single split systems consist of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. They are therefore suitable for individual rooms. The following Mitsubishi Electric single split combinations meet the minimum technical requirements and are currently eligible for subsidies.

  • MUZ-AY VG
  • MUZ-EF VG
  • MUZ-LN VG2
  • MUZ-LN VGHZ2
  • MUZ-RW 35/50 VGHZ
  • MUZ-FT 25/35 VGHZ

For particularly large rooms or multiple rooms, we recommend the multi-split version. This allows up to eight indoor units to be connected to one outdoor unit. The following multi-split combinations meet the minimum technical requirements as defined by the BEG.

  • MXZ 2F42VF4
  • MXZ 2F53VF4
  • MXZ 3F54VF4
  • MXZ 4F83VF2
  • MXZ 5F102VF2

How much is the subsidy?

For residential buildings, there are upper limits on the costs that can be charged:

  • 30,000 euros for the first residential unit,
  • 15,000 euros each for the second to sixth residential units
  • and €8,000 from the seventh residential unit onwards.

For single-family and two-family homes, there is up to €5,000 in funding available for planning and construction supervision. For multi-family homes, there is up to €2,000 per residential unit, with a maximum of €20,000.

Once the subsidy has been approved, you can apply for a supplementary loan from KfW of up to €120,000 per residential unit. Households with a taxable annual income of less than €90,000 are eligible for an interest rate reduction from federal funds. The subsidies do not have to be repaid if the subsidized measures are used for at least 10 years. During this period, audits may be carried out, for which all documents must be made available.

Systemic measures

Renewable energies in systemic measures

What are systemic measures? The promotion of systemic measures is not about individual measures or areas. It encompasses all measures that lead to an energy-efficient building standard.

Efficient air-to-air heat pumps play a key role here. If systems that use renewable energies cover more than 55 percent of the heating and cooling requirements, you can apply for a renewable energy bonus for the building. This is granted in addition to the subsidies paid when the respective efficiency level is achieved. If you are renovating, you will even receive an additional 5% subsidy.
