Sustainable heating and cooling at the Chalet Resort
Chalet resort with air-to-air heat pumps from the M series
Steinberger See, GermanyThe Chalet Resort at the Steinberger See lake lies at the heart of the hilly Oberpfalz region of eastern Bavaria. It offers a total of 17 houses with 62 m2 or 82 m2 of floorspace, each with premium 5-star facilities and a range of leisure activities for all possible tastes. The resort was opened in February 2022 and offers four different house categories. The beach chalets are located directly on the banks of the lake and have their own access to the water, along with a whirlpool in some cases. Just behind them are the lake chalets with or without a view of the lake, with their own beach section and access to the lake reserved for guests.

Background
Background
Focus on sustainability and nature
During the design of the system, the operator placed particular value on a sustainable and natural solution with ecologically sensitive equipment. The chalets are perfectly insulated and fully compliant with the requirements of the German Building Energy Act (GEG). The main building material is wood, which was chosen thanks to its good ecological balance. The operator chose screwed foundations instead of ground slabs, in order to minimise the amount of space to be sealed. This allows various species of insects and rodents to exist beneath the chalets, while also encouraging the growth of herbs and grasses. For the interior design too, the choice of materials also took sustainable certification into account.
Power supply from 100% renewable sources
One significant focus was on the chalets’ energy supply. The entire site uses only renewable energy sources procured via suitable contracts. This does more than just help the environment. It also allows an environmentally friendly supply of heating and cooling without the need for fossil fuels.
Which solution was chosen for the resort?
Solution
Air-to-air heat pumps from the M series
When it came to choosing a solution for the air conditioning at the Chalet Resort, the planners naturally wanted an option that would fit the site’s sustainable philosophy. The decision was made to use high-efficiencyair-to-air heat pump systemsfrom Mitsubishi Electric that would both heat and cool the 17 chalets.
The solution uses air-to-air heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric’s M series, specifically the MXZ 3F Multisplit systems. These deliver pleasant comfort every day of the year and are the ideal choice for small to medium-sized buildings. Each chalet has its own outdoor unit with a heating capacity of 7.0 kW and a cooling capacity of 5.4 kW, as well as three or four indoor units depending on the category. Every Multisplit system comprises one outdoor unit and the indoor units, with the outdoor unit always located outside of the apartment or building. The chosen system allows multiple indoor units to be connected to each outdoor unit, making it a compact solution for individual air conditioning in multiple rooms.
All in one: heating, cooling, dehumidifying and purifying
SolutionInnovative inverter technology
The main thing about this proposal that convinced the operator of the chalets was the fact that combining the heating and cooling functions in a single system was much more economical. This keeps both the costs and workload to a minimum, while also saving energy – the air conditioning systems in this series are among the most energy efficient in their class. This is down in no small part to the inverter technology that is fitted as standard. Thanks to their precisely adjustable output, the inverter-controlled systems provide only the precise amount of cooling or heating capacity that is currently required in the room. This innovative inverter technology helps the units achieve the highest energy efficiency class of A+++ in cooling mode and A++ in heating mode. (Energy efficiency classes from A+++ to D)

Efficiency and comfort harmoniously combined
Indoors, guests can enjoy the full convenience of a traditional hotel room, as the air conditioning concept is designed for both comfort and efficiency. The indoor units ensure a particularly pleasant climate in the chalets at all times, while generating just 19 dB(A) of noise so as not to disturb the guests’ well-earned break. The 17 individually designed chalets provide heating or cooling via premium-designMSZ-EFwall-mounted units in the comfort version. They deliver 2.2 kW of heating capacity and 1.8 kW of cooling capacity.
The indoor units series is available in three colours, with the customer choosing gloss white to provide a neutral colour tone that integrates the units into a harmonious interior design. The air conditioning units also feature a V blocking filter that neutralises viruses and bacteria, making them suitable for people with allergies. The integratedfilter insertensures clean room air and inactivates dust, odours and pollen. The rooms are automatically dehumidified in cooling mode.

Smart control
The systems are controlled by PAR-41MAA wired remote control systems that offer guests a high level of convenience and enable simple and convenient control. The wall-mounted remote controls come in a sleek modern design that clearly combines all functions in a compact system. The high-resolution backlit display can be easily read in all light conditions. This allows guests to set the temperature themselves and switch the units in every room on or off. The indoor units also come with an integrated WiFi adapter for remote control from the main building. This allows the management to control the indoor units with theMELCloud smart home control systemvia a smartphone, tablet or computer to further increase both comfort and efficiency.
The key points
Summary- The five-star Chalet Resort on the banks of the Steinberger See lake offers 17 chalets that were designed with sustainability, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly fittings in mind.
- Energy is supplied by 100% renewable sources, while the chalets offer particularly energy-efficient air conditioning provided by air-to-air heat pump systems.
- These use Multisplit systems from the M series that deliver highly efficient heating and cooling all year round.
- The use of innovative inverter technology means that the units achieve the highest energy efficiency class.
- The air conditioning units feature a V blocking filter that neutralises viruses and bacteria, making them suitable for people with allergies.
