The MELRent heating and cooling rental service

The new business segment

Blog article 31.07.2024

Do you need a temporary heating or cooling solution for your customers at short notice?

Then Uwe Saathoff is your man, he joined our team in November 2023 and has just launched the new MELRent rental service.

MELRent offers heat pumps and chillers for heating and cooling as a flexible rental solution.

Uwe Saathoff explains exactly how this works and the advantages of renting in an interview.

In which cases does it make sense to rent heat pumps or chillers instead of buying them?

The advantages of renting MELRent products are obvious: on the customer side, there are no investment costs or expenses for maintenance and service in the event of equipment failure. This increases liquidity for the end customer. And then, of course, rental always pays off if, for example, there is an emergency in a data center for which server rooms need to be cooled at short notice. In the event sector, rental heating and cooling for event rooms is in great demand. Temporary cooling and heating systems are also required time and again in temporary container cities. These are the classics where renting is generally more worthwhile than buying - mainly due to the great flexibility.

When I buy a system, I usually have a fixed price that I can calculate with. What is it like when renting?

We offer full cost transparency - and also staggered fixed prices. Depending on the rental period. We rent by the week and also charge by the day. This allows you to draw up exact monthly and annual accounts. And of course, the longer you rent, the cheaper the average daily price.

Uwe Saathoff - a portrait

Uwe Saathoff

Uwe Saathoff, 53 years old, has been supporting us in a leading role in the MELRent business unit since November 2023. He had previously worked for a well-known company in the refrigeration/air conditioning sector since 1990 - from fitter to member of the management board and sales manager for Germany. The trained electrician for high-voltage technology is not only active in sports in his free time - he also volunteers for KIWANIS, the second-largest children's service organization after UNICEF.

And do you then only provide the respective devices or what does your range of services look like?

In principle, the customer can choose: We naturally supply the logistics and accessories, such as coupling, connection and cable systems, pump stations, buffer tanks and hoses. On request, we can also install the devices on site and take care of monitoring. All devices have a SIM card that guarantees a permanent Internet connection. This means that every fault is reported to our service center via e-mail and we often know what is going on in terms of heating and cooling on site before our customers do.

That's an all-round carefree package. Does everyone have to rent it completely?

No, no. Of course, we create our offers individually and modularly so that our customers only get and pay for exactly what they really need. This makes MELRent a very effective and attractive solution.

Which target groups do you focus on?

In fact, the areas of application are so diverse that I find it difficult to name just a few here. MELRent is suitable for all industrial applications that require selective - and sometimes simply seasonal - support for existing systems in order to absorb peak cooling or heating loads. MELRent is certainly of particular interest to local authorities, data centers and production halls and warehouses. Municipalities are interesting for us because they are in a dilemma that we can help them out of. On the one hand, they are called upon to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible - but on the other hand, the funding and financing options are uncertain. One keyword here would be municipal heat planning. In this context, heat pumps that municipalities initially rent are a good option.

And why data centers? Surely they have long been well supplied with cooling systems? Where do you see great potential there?

Well, we will be massively expanding computing power in Germany over the next few years. Artificial intelligence and autonomous driving are just two key points here. Google, Microsoft and data center operators have already announced investments in the billions. There is enormous potential here, as the demand for cooling capacity is naturally linked to these plans. And there will certainly always be a need for quick emergency and temporary cooling solutions - ideal fields of application for MELRent.
In the case of production halls and warehouses, the use of large photovoltaic systems on the roofs will make the use of electric heat pumps and cooling systems particularly attractive.

Does it look like you have a big and exciting task ahead of you?

Definitely. And I'm really looking forward to it. I've known Mitsubishi Electric for many years from the "other side", as a customer. I appreciate the high-quality products, the company's agility, its innovative strength and, above all, the good atmosphere in the teams of colleagues here.
